Both ministries of higher education of the Kurdistan
Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi federal government reached a
groundbreaking deal to resolve outstanding issues between both parties,
including the recognition of the universities.
The lack of recognition by the federal ministry had been a
major concern of UKH graduates for many years who had been facing obstacles to
win international and federal scholarships and grants. According to a press
release of the KRG Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, a
senior delegation from the ministry headed by Minister Dr Yousif Gorran visited
Baghdad to meet their counterparts on Wednesday to discuss a number of issues
and resolve them under a memorandum of understanding based on the Iraqi
Constitution. The Iraqi Federal Government?s Minister of Higher Education and
Scientific Research Dr Abdulrazaq Abduljalil Issa told the delegate that his
ministry will from this moment forward recognise all universities in the
Kurdistan Region that are recognised by the KRG MoHE without any further
assessment for them.
UKH Vice Chancellor Dr Mohammed Mochtar warmly welcomed the
decision. ?We had been trying pursuing both parties over the last period to
reach to this solution. UKH has long met all the requirements of Baghdad?s MoHE
but their decision was getting delayed for no obvious reasons. I send my
warmest congratulations to all alumni and students.
