in Post-Conflict Iraq" Conference
Amman - Jan 2011: UKH Vice Chancellor Prof. Serwan Baban participated as a senior member of the Iraqi delegation to "The Reconstruction of Higher Education in Post-Conflict Iraq" conference which took place in Jordan from 26 to 28 January 2011.
The conference which was launched under the patronage of HRH Prince Al Hassan Bin Talal and was organized in partnership with Institute of International Education (IIE) focused during its 3 day program on challenges facing higher education in Iraq after the war and the solutions and mechanisms that can help in developing higher education institutions and the quality of education students are receiving.
"The meetings were fruitful and very productive", said Vice Chancellor Baban. He added It was a unique opportunity to have all decision makers under one roof alongside international academicians specialized in developing and enhancing higher education in third world countries.
According to Dr. Henry Jarecki, Vice Chairman of IIE “This conference is a gathering of historic proportion. We must be ready to make history and to get results, to leverage the investment that many have made in protecting and developing Iraqi scholarship through some of its darkest days to turn now to the larger purpose of all of this work: the reconstruction of higher education in Iraq.”

| UKH Celebrates the First Group of Scholarships to UK |
20th January 2011 – Erbil: In a large celebration event, HE Dr. Delawer Ala'Aldeen, Minister of Higher Education and the British Ambassador Dr. John Jenkins announced the issuance of the first group of visas from Erbil for students granted scholarships to British universities.
Prof. Serwan Baban, Vice Chancellor of UKH opened the ceremony by highlighting the importance of investing in human resources in the region and the value it adds to the development process. Minister Delawer Ala'Aldeen emphasized on the positive cooperation between the British Embassy and the Ministry of Higher Education and the smooth procedures they have adopted to help our students pursue their education in the UK.
The event ended with a group photo of the Minister, the British Ambassador, Chairman of the Governing Board of UKH, Vice Chancellor of UKH with the first group of scholarship students holding their visas to the UK.

| British Ambassador Invites UKH Graduates to Pursue their Studies in Britain |
20th January 2011 – Erbil: The British Ambassador to Iraq Dr. John Jenkins encouraged students at UKH to pursue their postgraduate studies at universities in the UK and highlighted the convenience of moving to the British education system as UKH adopts the British accreditation system.
The Ambassador's comments came in an event organized at UKH main auditorium to explain British education policies and highlight procedures and regulations for students interested in pursuing their higher education at British universities. In his speech, the British Ambassador expressed his appreciation for the unique system UKH adopts and the high academic standards maintained which make it compatible to the academic system in the West and provides students with smoother move to British universities and higher chances from benefitting from direct enrollment as well as different scholarship schemes available to students in Iraq. |

| The Turkish Minister of National Education, KRG Higher Education Minister and the KRG Education Minister visit UKH |
Erbil 16.Dec 2010 - The Turkish Minister of National Education Her Excellency, Nimet Çubukçu accompanied by His Excellency Professor Delawer Ala'Aldeen and His Excellency Safeen Muhsin Dazaiee along with a large delegation of high Turkish officials visited UKH today as part of their participation at the "Revitalizing Research in Kurdistan International Conference" taking place in Erbil.
The guest and the delegation had extended discussions about the future of higher education in Kurdistan region as well as the success of UKH and the important role it is playing as a unique, independent university adopting international academic standards and funded by the government. The guest also took a tour of different facilities at the university including the library.

| UKH Leads Women Empowerment in Higher Education |
Supported by a 2 year fund from the British Academy, UKH initiated a unique women empowerment program in the region focusing on women leadership in higher education.
The fund was gained through the efforts of the team led by Professor Serwan Baban, Vice Chancellor of UKH. Despite fierce competition among universities and academic institutions, UKH managed to present a proposal in partnership with University of Brighton, UK which was successful in obtaining funding from the British Academy

| UKH Launches the First PGCERT in the Region in Collaboration with the University of Brighton |
UKH succeeded in establishing and launching the three year International Postgraduate Certificate for Higher Education (PGCERT) Program in partnership with the University of Brighton, UK. The program which is funded by UKH aims at enhancing the quality of academic performance and further developing teaching skills of UKH faculty members.
The first phase of this program launched during the last week of October and was led by Professor Gina Wisker, Head of the Center of Learning and Teaching at the University of Brighton and Dr. John Hilsdon, Head of the Learning Department at the University of Plymouth and the Chair of Association of Learning Development in Higher Education in UK.

| Funded by DelPHE, UKH Starts a 3 year Teaching & Learning Training Workshops for the Higher Education Community in Kurdistan |
UKH launched a unique 3 year training initiative aiming at enhancing teaching capabilities at universities and institutions of higher education. This three year program which is funded by the Development Partnerships in Higher Education program (DelPHE) is designed to enable higher education institutions (HEIs) to act as catalysts for sustainable development.
The fund was gained through the efforts of the team led by Professor Serwan Baban, Vice Chancellor of UKH. Despite fierce competition among universities and academic institutions, UKH managed to present an ambitious proposal in partnership with leading UK universities which secured gaining the fund for 3 years.

| The UKH Library Information Literacy/Research Classes |
It has been the UKH Library’s Vision to “be a national and international leader in providing library services for UKH students, faculty, staff, and the residents of Hawler.” As part of this vision the Library is teaching information literacy/research skills to every class. The UKH Library is among top one percent of all college libraries, in comparison with colleges in the developed world, to do this. The goal is to teach students and interested staff to become independent learners. The UKH Library uses the American Library Association’s “Association of College and Research Library Standards for Higher Education.” |

| Chaplin of the Mountains |
On Wednesday the 13th of October, 4 pm, the UKH auditorium will show a screening of Chaplin of the Mountains. A film by Kurdish filmmaker Jano Rosebiani. This is an international film about Kurdistan that is written and directed by this talented filmmaker and is a pre-release screening. |

| First UKH Graduation Ceremony |

The first UKH graduation ceremony was held at Peshawa Hall in the ministry of Culture.
The Chancellor Mr. Nechirvan Barzani representative with the Vice chancellor. Prof. Baban and the Minister of Higher education Dr. Dlawer, gave speeches as well as a student representative.

| Art Exhibition |
The university of Kurdistan- Hawler, was the grounds for an art exhibition by Mr. Ismael Khayat. The exhibition that was held from 16th to the 18th of May, was opened by his Excellency minister of Culture Mr. Kawa Mahmood minister of culture in the Kurdistan regional government.
